Bluewater, Park 20|20 Beukenhorst Zuid, Hoofddorp, The Netherlands

Bluewater Energy Services, a leading Dutch engineering firm, chose Park 20|20 as the home for its new headquarters. Designed by William McDonough + Partners, the 8,000 square meter building, rated BREEAM Excellent, consolidates approximately 600 employees in one facility, creating an inspirational workplace that supports collaboration, well-being and productivity.

The key goal of the design is to create exceptional, high-quality environments for Bluewater’s exceptional people. The interiors at Bluewater feature community gathering spaces and a light-filled interior atrium that organizes offices and community amenities along a bustling spine. Careful attention was paid to acoustics throughout the facility so that employees have a choice of places for quiet concentration and places for community buzz and serendipitous interaction. The building supports physical and psychological health through connections to nature, and is designed to allow people direct light and air over the course of the day and through the seasons, which has been shown to have numerous benefits to human health, wellness, and productivity.

Bluewater is designed for disassembly and utilizes MBDC’s Cradle to Cradle® Product Screening to ensure materials are recovered as nutrients for safe, continuous cycling—becoming assets with real economic value, not liabilities sent to landfills. For example, the facade features a Mosa Tile rain screen system that is Cradle to Cradle CertifiedTM and can be disassembled and reutilized again safely.

Supporting innovation at Bluewater Energy Services requires continuous improvement and adaptation over time. Technologies change daily, research approaches range widely, people work differently, the balance between business units will change—all of these dynamics require a building that meets today’s needs and anticipates those of tomorrow. The client, design team, and construction team created an environment that enables easy spatial and technological reconfiguration to support Bluewater’s workplace and diversity over the long term.

“Bluewater is pleased with the construction of our new headquarters. The Cradle to Cradle philosophy is integral to our business, and allows us in a very economical manner to choose quality, efficiency, and sustainability through this unique location and new building designed by William McDonough + Partners. We’re taking on the challenge of working with more staff and less office space. Environment and safety are the two most important pillars of our company and focus on them will remain so in our future office.”
