Eco-Effective Airport Temperate Climate


In response to a client committed to innovative solutions, WM+P designed a prototypical airport that creates an aesthetically pleasing, welcoming place, as a respite to the frustrations of commercial travel. Designed as a cost effective, high performance facility with reduced operating costs, sizeable energy and maintenance savings, and a low carbon footprint to partially offset emissions from airplanes.

The Cradle to Cradle approach allows for the anticipation of future technologies through a recognition that buildings can adapt over time to changes in use and technologies. The design concept is based on an idea that a single structural module can be repeated and combined in different configurations to form the primary concourse and terminal spaces. The module is made of two components: one side with a vegetative roof and the other with a solar photovoltaic roof. Combinations of this element can be customized for the requirements of a particular site, allowing for airports with a small, simple terminal or larger, more elaborate configurations. Daylighting and views, incorporated into the structural module, as well as an enclosed exterior courtyard, serve as principle features to heighten the travel experience.
