McDonough To Headline 2005 FORTUNE Global Forum

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (May 9, 2005) – Environmental leader, architect and designer William McDonough will deliver three presentations detailing positive environmental solutions to world problems during the 2005 FORTUNE Global Forum: China and The New Asian Century, May 16-18 in Beijing, China. More than 300 top international business, political and thought leaders will gather to address concerns about issues related to maximizing business opportunities in Asia, fostering business growth and assessing risk.

McDonough will head Forum sessions focusing on environmental challenges and opportunities. His plenary address will describe positive design approaches to "Megacities: Urbanization in Asia." His two panels will consider additional strategies of change in "Energy: Finding Fuel for Continued Economic Growth," and "A Looming Environmental Crisis of Design?"

McDonough's presentations will draw on his rational, earth-friendly design theories. He also will offer examples from the unique, Cradle to CradleSM design practice for which he and his companies are noted. Its designs are modeled on the effectiveness of those in nature to eliminate waste.

  • In "Megacities," McDonough will weigh the rapid rise and long-term economic, social, and environmental implications of Asia's sprawling urban centers and offer pragmatic ideas for city planners. Examining the complex public/private relationships that determine the growth and development of urban areas, he will discuss the latest in city planning and infrastructure-developments designed to optimize urbanization, engage the environment in a positive way, and generate massive business opportunities.
  • In "Energy," he will describe viable and sustainable alternate energy sources and product design advances that address oil-price uncertainty, rising energy demands, and concerns over climate change.
  • In "Crises," he will investigate the central role of design in countering problems of increasing pollution and waste resulting from poor design concepts. McDonough will consider how Cradle to Cradle design can go beyond tweaking damaging industrial systems and lead to positive change. Cradle to Cradle design offers a framework in which the effective, regenerative cycles of nature provide models to design products that are effective, efficient and eliminate the concept of waste - a design approach perceived by business as the next step in the Total Quality Management movement.
